Antique 20th Century Sterling Silver & Coromandel Wood Cigar box Mappin & Webb
Antique 20th Century Cigar box in Coromandel wood & Sterling silver Maker Mappin & Webb Date London 1901. The rich colour of this piece really sets it off against the silver. The box is in excellent condition, the silver corners and handle are all hallmarked with a Cedar wood lined interior. Because of its dark, rich colour and beautiful grain, Coromandel wood was sometimes used as inlay or contrast material in furniture made from mahogany or rosewood. By the early 20th century, Coromandel wood became scarce, and many antiques featuring it are now highly valuable. Today, due to conservation efforts, it is rarely used in modern furniture
